Many magnesium products contain magnesium compounds that are not readily absorbable or provide only little elemental magnesium. The three most popular magnesium compounds are magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide and magnesium glycine. In one clinical study, amino acid chelates such as magnesium glycine show a higher bioavailability than inorganic compounds such as magnesium oxide, which is absorbed in only 4%. The bioavailability of magnesium aspartate, magnesium citrate, magnesium lactate and magnesium malate falls somewhere in between. In a clinical study of 16 subjects, the absorption of magnesium chloride proved to be the highest of all forms of magnesium.

Search for purity

Some magnesium tablets contain titanium dioxide, which is an insoluble bleaching agent. Although "widely recognized as safe" by the US Food and Drug Administration, titanium dioxide has been negatively associated with cancer and neurological damage research.

Check the safe dose

Many supplement brands contain an amount of magnesium that exceeds the upper limit of magnesium set at 350 mg per day. This is a red flag for consumers, indicating that the formulas have not been developed by a doctor or FDA guidelines.

Calculate the magnesium values

For example, consider magnesium citrate or magnesium glycine. Often these tablets or capsules are delivered in doses of 400 mg. However, it is only a magnesium compound where the ions of each element constantly ionize and then bind together. When coupled together, they are not subsequently absorbed into the cells. For this type of product, the best cellular absorption is about 20%. Thus, you think you are getting 400 mg, but in fact you are only getting 80 mg!
